What are cannabinoids?

The active ingredients in medicinal cannabis are called cannabinoids. Cannabinoids can be extracted from the resin of the female cannabis flower. Two of the most researched cannabinoids, THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol), and CBD (cannabidiol) are prescribed for certain patients.

Once inside the body, cannabinoids bind to (cannabinoid) receptors to elicit an effect. These receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system, which has a role in regulating a range of functions and processes including pain perception, sleep, mood, appetite and memory.
